The role of Omega 3 in children’s learning & development

Omega 3 in brain health, child studying with parent

Brain Health

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is a key component of the brain, contributing to maintenance of normal brain function.[1]

Omega-3 in eye health, child's eye

Eye Health

DHA is a key component of the retina, contributing to the maintenance of normal vision.[2]

Omega-3 in heart health, child running

Heart Health

EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA are vital for heart health, contributing to the normal function of the heart.[3]

Most children do not get enough Omega 3 DHA from their diet alone, so it might be worth considering supplementing with a DHA-rich fish oil to support your child’s brain function.

Why is DHA so important for children's brains?

During childhood new connections are formed between the brain and nerve cells in response to exposure to new experiences and environments. These constant changes in the brain's network help with the development of visual, attentional, motor, cognition, and language skills.

DHA is the most abundant Omega 3 fatty acid in the brain, making up to 50 percent of the fatty acids in some brain cells.

It forms the outer structure of brain cells and has been found to play a unique role in normal brain development[4] and function[1]. It is also involved in cell signalling, which is how your brain cells communicate with each other.

Half of the brain’s DHA is accumulated during pregnancy, a child's brain acquires five-times the level of fatty acids on a daily basis as the adult brain[5].

Research has shown the significance of obtaining sufficient EPA and DHA during childhood by demonstrating the positive benefits when these Omega 3s are abundant in the diet, and negative effects when they are lacking[6].
