The chilly winter weather combined with dry heat from central heating can play havoc with your skin. We all like to look our best and how your skin looks and feels is central to this.  So with the winter months upon us, the essential fatty acid experts Efamol® have come up with five top tips to help you keep your skin looking at its best this season.

  1. Stay hydrated

During the colder winter months, skin may become drier and sometimes a little more sensitive so it’s essential to stay hydrated. But reaching for a cold glass of water might not be your first choice.  Caffeinated drinks can be dehydrating, so if you fancy a hot drink try swapping to herbal teas or hot water and lemon.

  1. Use an SPF

The summer months may be well and truly over, but it’s still important to use a broad spectrum SPF on your skin. Levels of UVB are lower in winter months, but UVA is still present. UVA affects the elastin in the skin and leads to wrinkles and sun-induced skin ageing. Not all SPF protects against UVA so make sure you check the star rating.

  1. Get your 5 a day but aim for more

Follow healthy eating guidance and make sure you eat at least 5 portions of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables a day, healthy fats from oily fish and nuts, plus a good portion of protein. This should give optimal levels of the nutrients needed to keep skin healthy, including Vitamins A and C, biotin and zinc.  Try batch cooking soup and eating it throughout the week as a healthy way to increase the amount of vegetables in your diet.

  1. Watch out stress which can play havoc with the appearance of your skin

Stress can take its toll on your skin and lead to premature appearance of aging. Your body produces excess cortisol when stressed which can damage the elastin and collagen which are structural components of the skin and play a role in skin appearance. Prioritise looking after yourself this winter by taking time out for you, perhaps take up yoga or meditation.  Get out in nature and spend quality time with friends and family.  It is not only your skin that will thank you.
